http://www.absoluteradio.co.uk...tory.html?id=3933026I went to see the legendary Joe Strummer with his Mescaleros at Brixton Academy in summer 2001. As I went straight from work, I had some time to kill before meeting my mate Keith (the biggest Clash/Strummer fan in the world) in order to get my ticket and hang out with him at the gig.
I was in the shop next to the Academy to buy a sandwich and as I queued - who did I spot in front of me - only my hero Joe Strummer buying a newspaper! Nervously, I tapped him on his shoulder, as he turned around, all the many questions I have had in my head 'if I ever met Joe' since I was 15 evaporated and I turned into a mumbling wreck.
All I could come out with was 'erm, I've come to see you play tonight'. How lame! Joe swapped newspaper to his other arm and firmly shook my
hand and looked me in the eyes and simply said 'cheers for the support,> it means a great deal' and with that he paid for his paper and left. What a legend!
Keith eventually turned up and was gutted he didn't meet Joe.
The gig then got even more surreal, as at the start of the gig, we were at the back of Academy and when burst into 'White Riot', I thought it time to get closer to the stage and lost Keith in the process. Down the front, on the right hand side by the back stage door was only Mick Jones - former guitarist of The Clash. I was a bit more brave this time and so shouted in Mick's ear 'how much of a legend he is' and that 'he should be onstage with Joe'. Mick's reply was 'no I'm not and I'm retired too'. Class. We then went onto dancing/pogoing to 'I fought the law' with my arm around Mick's shoulders. What a legend!
Keith was also gutted he didn't meet Mick.
