STIFF LITTLE FINGERS/CHELSEA/SELF ABUSE
OLD FIRE STATION BOURNEMOUTH 2ND APRIL 2009
Bournemouth's Old Fire Station tonight hosted what was a mouth watering bill of punk music, the place was absolutely packed and everybody seemed to have a great time except possibly Jake Burns. 1st up were Bournemouth's very own punk Band "Self Abuse" who formed back in 1982 and split up sometime in 1984 and like most decent bands reformed again in 2004. They arrive on stage as the venue is filling up and do their best to get the party started, lead singer and bass player Andy Nazer does his best to get the crowd whipped up with a few fast punk fuelled numbers. The band seem to be really enjoying night and blow off the cobwebs with an excellent version of Eddie Cochran's "C'mon Everybody" which had a few aging punks jumping around at the front.
It is great to see Gene October's "Chelsea" live finally after all these years, the band comprises of Tony Barber from The Buzzcocks on bass, James Stephenson from The Alarm/Generation X/Gene Loves Jezebel on guitar and Chris Bashford drums. Gene's grips his microphone with two hands arches his back and belts out the lyrics supported brilliantly by the glorious sound of James Stephenson's Gibson guitar, there are many fan's here tonight who have waited a long time to see "Chelsea" back in action and they did not go home disappointed. They belt out a great version of The Clash's "I fought the Law" where Gene did his best to get the whole of the crowd singing along and then accusing some of the audience of being up in London the day before taking part in the G20 riots, politics aside they play a great set including some fresh sounding classics as "The Loner" and "Urban Kids".
The atmosphere and the temperature in the venue was rising and with a mass of hot sweaty bodies lining the front of the stage, the intro music for the mighty "Stiff Little Fingers" started , the familiar chant from the crowd of "fingers, fingers" greeted the band as the arrived on stage, Jake Burns strapped on his guitar and before he could even play a note a full pint of beer was thrown from the audience hit him full on, he said "If that happens again we are all gonna Fuck off right now". Looking somewhat distressed he launched into their 1st number "Roots Radicals Rockers and Reggae" which had the whole of the crowd bouncing around all over the place. I have seen the band over a dozen times live and honestly have never seen them play a bad show however tonight they did not seem to have the passion or the fire in their bellies to come up with the usual amazing show. A few new songs were thrown into the set "One Man Island" and "Liar's Club" which both had politic subject matter with the latter some what tongue in cheek dedicated to Bush and Blair. What the band lacked in, the audience truly made up for with virtually everyone singing along almost word perfect. The intro to the final song "Alternative Ulster" seemed to spark a riot of amongst the crowd down the front, with maximum amount of chaos with lots of 40 something sweaty men jumping up and down like maniacs.
