Joey Ramone Birthday Bash, Irving Plaza, Manhattan

"The Alarm will appear at the 'Joey Ramone Birthday Bash and Lymphoma Research Foundation Concert' at Irving Plaza, Manhattan on Friday May 19th. As Mike Peters says, 'I am particularly pleased and honoured to be a part of this show especially in the light of my own leukaemia battle (and having once been diagnosed with lymphoma back in 1995). I'll never forget being on stage at the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan in the late 1980's and seeing Joey Ramone stood at the back of the stalls (You could see him from the stage because he was so tall and stood out with his jet black hair and dark sunglasses). He never wanted to come back stage -he just wanted to see the show and leave, but even now I remember being (and still feel) 'honoured' that a member of the Ramones had come to see my band, The Alarm.' Mary,

I should have the answer sometime late tomorrow afternoon. I'm going to a press conference at 4 PM at Irving Plaza. Not sure I will be able to post before the show, but just come find me when you get to Irving Plaza and I can pass along what I find out.
Has anyone said anything about a pre-show get-together? There are some pretty good restaurants and bars not far from Irving Plaza.

Tim

I noticed a gig report request by Mr.Fulton on the other thread & I thought others would like to know as well...I figued I'd post it here..

The Joey Ramone Birthday bash was great!
(although I didn't see too many firmiliar faces-maybe they got VIP tix that I didn't have??)

There was alot of music & film footage of Joey Ramone in between acts. Also in between acts they had this circus-like freaky yet fun show from Coney Island-it was very very funny!(I think Joey Ramone would have enjoyed it-if I may take the liberty of saying so...)

The Alarm opened up with a very high energy Superchannel
mytown
without a fight
(I know I'm missing 1 more new song-someone can fill me in...)
45 rpm
68 guns

In between Mike spoke about honoring Joey Ramones life & how he felt honored that Joey had attended a few Alarm gigs & he could tell it was him standing in the back because he was so tall.At the end he said Joey Ramone is still standing in the back today at his Birthday bash(in spirit)He also related kind sentiments about Joey having Limphoma & added his stories & bouts with the ailment. As usual Mikes very charming and hearfelt words moved everyone.

I was very excited when Mike announced the new show also in NYC on July 12.

Me & my sweetheart had a great time.We bought Romones t-shirts & hat.I wanted to buy more(If I had the means to) as all the proceeds go to the Limphoma society=a great cause.

Over all I'd say a great time was had by all.

The missing song was CEASE AND DESIST. And it kicked ass!
Nice job with your review, Mary. You summed up the show quite well. I'll just add a few observations.
There were a bunch of us near the front, right in front of James. I ducked my way close to the stage as soon as I saw Steve adjusting the drums behind the Coney Island Circus Freaks, or whatever their name was. That's when I saw Michele and several of her friends. Soon we were joined by B-Rock and Mrs. B-Rock, who apparently had to check their luggage at Irving Plaza because of a flight delay from Detroit. Now THAT is dedication.
The Alarm crowd was smaller because some people are over at the Dave Sharp Weekend and also because some couldn't get tickets for the sold-out event. We definitely were an enthusiastic bunch. Mike also got the crowd involved during Cease and Desist, as well as 45 RPM.
The set was very high energy and the band sounded great. Mike's voice was in top shape. The band blazed through the first couple of songs and then Mike related his story before Without A Fight and really tore into the song with an aggressive rendition. I thought they were done after 45 RPM, but then they just broke into 68 Guns. I wish they would have played another song or two -- especially considering those posers The Strokes play a measly two songs. There's a band that knows nothing about effort.
One thing I didn't know that Mike told me before the show was that The Alarm was asked to play the Bash last year, but Mike was touring and couldn't make it work. He told them to keep a spot in the lineup open for him for this year. This was before his diagnosis in December. More to come after I transcribe the interview I did with him Friday afternoon.
I got a few pictures at the show that should be developed later this week. Keep your fingers crossed. I really need to buy a digital camera

Tim

There are some press photos up from the JRBB although Mike is listed as both Mike and Mitch Peters.
