I think it was around 2000 or 2001 when I first saw that the alarm were "still going". I found the site and saw the re-issue of the back catalogue and thought "yeah, I'll buy that someday" but you know what.... Someday never came.
I bought the poppy fields album but never found the readies for the back catalogue.
Not so long back I was travelling backl from work in Hamburg and, unusually for me, I picked up the freebie newspaper, and was inspired by an article about Mike Peters SECOND battle with "the big C".
I was shocked and found it hard to cope with for a while. I'd promised myself to get that compilation (but like a lot of people I never did what I said I would do).
Soon after I bought the Alarm 200 box-set (and under attack) and I reckon I spend 90% of my time listening to the alarm.
The more I listen the more inspired I find myself!
Some years back I contacted the company that make ZORBS (http://www.zorb.com/) agout the idea of walking in a ZORB across the channel. At the time they weren't too impressed so I shelved the idea but a short while ago I decided to pick it up again.
My friend & I are planning to try and cross the "english" channel by "walking on water" using a very large inflatable "hamster wheel" type of contraption.
It may sound really stupid but we're certain that we can do this and we've been talking to the people from the company that make the "Zorb's" and they apparently now make a sort of transparent inflatable hamster wheel.
Our plan is to add a saw tooth type of profile to the outside of the wheel so it propels itself a bit like a paddle steamer and to literally walk across the channel.
We need to create & test a prototype and this will require some financial support (not that we're asking for any - but national coverage of our attempt would help to secure the resrouces we need). We're looking at various options but are certain that we can be ready for some time next year in fact we're training already.
I'd love to do this in recognition of Mike and the inspiration that he's been for me and many others. For me his battle with cancer is perfectly reflected in the idea of walking on water beating the elemnts and achieving something that othe rpeopel thought was impossible or stupid.
Right now I'm contacting all sorts of people looking to get this thing "rolling" and I thought that people here would be interested in my idea.
Let me know what you think by e-mailing info@highnmighty.co.uk (please make sure that your e-mails have a cool heading so that they get past the spam filters). I'd love to hear from you.
